Mr. George Joseph Smith, age 77, of Newnan, died on January 29, 2010.
Mr. Smith was born on June 28, 1932, and lived in a Catholic Orphanage in Jacksonville, Florida, until the age of three when he was adopted by his parents, George and Ruth Moody Smith. He lived in Miami Beach Florida, for most of his childhood, later coming to Georgia to attend Georgia Military Academy in College Park his 10th and 11th grade years, where he participated in the weightlifting and gymnastics programs. Upon returning to Miami Beach, he graduated from St. Patrick High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Korea as well as Germany. In 1959, he married Elaine Schumann and moved to Minnesota. This marriage would last for over 50 years. In 1970, he embarked on a journey that would include purchasing a steel craft boat, transforming it into a houseboat, and, with his family, navigating the Mississippi River from St. Paul to New Orleans. This trip would ultimately lead the family to reside in Florida.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Elaine Schumann Smith; son, Wayne George Smith and his wife Cassandra of Grand Ridge, Florida; daughters, Suzanne Smith of Port Angeles, Washington, Ruth Whitaker and her husband Donald of Newnan, Jeanne Washburn and her husband Michael of Posen, Michigan; grandchildren, Veronica Landreau, Stephen Whitaker, Ashlee Smith, Matthew Smith, Jacob Washburn, Ethan Washburn; great grandchildren, Dawson Whitaker, Faith Landreau, Cheyenne Landreau and Serenity Smith.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, February 1, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Higgins Hillcrest Chapel with Chaplain Mary Ruth Davidson officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
