Major (Retired) James Monroe Ray
U.S. Army Major (Retired) James Monroe Ray, 97, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He was born April 3, 1916, in Gatman, Mississippi, to the late Rufus Thomas Ray & Lola Brewer Ray.
Mr. Ray served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1960 and fought in both World War II and the Korean War. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and Korea, receiving double Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. After retiring from the military, Mr. Ray worked for the Civil Service retiring in 1980. Since 1997, he and his wife of 70 years, Sallie Jean Ray, resided in Sharpsburg, GA. He remained a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Forest Park, GA for 54 years.
The funeral is Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11:30 a.m. at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 351 Morrow Rd, Forest Park, GA 30297.

Survivors include wife, Sallie Jean Ray; three children, James P. Ray of Newnan, Janice Ingle of Tulsa, OK, Joy Hall of Mansfield, TX; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
