Mr. James Monroe Harper
Mr. James “Jimmy” Monroe Harper passed away peacefully at home in Newnan, GA, at the age of 81 on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, after a valiant fight with end stage renal failure.
Born Oct. 9, 1931, in Oklahoma City, OK, to David Monroe and Clarice Fordham Harper, the family moved back to the Atlanta area where he grew up in East Point and College Park. He began his military career with the United States Air Force in 1951 and served his country during the Korean War until 1955.
During his time in the military, he married his childhood sweetheart, Juanita Fay Verhine, and started their family.
After leaving the military Jimmy settled his family in the Atlanta-Hapeville area and started his 30-year career with Ford Motor Company.
He is survived by his son, James Monroe Harper Jr. (Rachael); daughter, Jayne Harper Robinson (Raymond); grandchildren, Amanda Robinson Jarrell (Andrew), Darby Michelle Robinson, Ashley Elizabeth Harper; great-grandchildren, Andon Harris Jarrell, Adeline Jayne Jarrell; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Harper Chandler (Bill), Dorothy Harper Turner (Selvie), and Linda Harper Martin (J.D.).
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home Chapel, Peachtree City, GA with Elder Ronald Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends and family Thursday, April 11 at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home from 5 - 8 p.m. The family asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Georgia Transplant Foundation, 500 Sugar Mill Road, Suite 170A, Atlanta, GA 30350.
