Mrs. Imogene M. 'Gene' Barnett
Mrs. Imogene M. “Gene” Barnett, age 84, of Sharpsburg and Peachtree City, Georgia, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at her daughter’s home and surrounded by family.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1930, in Mobile, Alabama, to Allen Craig and Irma Weldy Minton. She grew up in Winchester, Virginia. She met the love of her life, Horace M. Barnett, while attending William and Mary College, and they married Aug. 27, 1949.
She worked for 30 years as a kindergarten teacher, ending her career as the director of kindergarten at Peachtree City Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynne Anderson of Sharpsburg, Georgia; sons, Jim Barnett and wife Renee’ of Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Rick Barnett and wife Rebekah of Newnan, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Aric, Alex and Austin Anderson, Jamie and Jesse Barnett, and Zane, Trinity and Van Barnett.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Horace M. Barnett; son, Richard Eugene Barnett; and sisters, Lynne Rosson and Martha Smith.
Gene and her late husband, Horace, adopted four children and set inspiring examples of just what parenting should be. Gene was loved and respected by everyone who knew her. She was an outstanding woman who dedicated her life’s work to her family and to the education of her community’s children.
The family of Mrs. Barnett would like to thank Nancy Bridges, Jerri Austin; Senior Helpers, Dorothy, Stacie, Sally and Vivian; and Gentiva Hospice and Nurse Amy for their friendship and loving care.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Memorial Gardens. Reverend Harrow Barrow will officiate.
