Mr. Jimmy Williams

Mr. James Ambrose “Jimmy” Williams was born on July 6, 1920, and died of cancer on August 5, 2014, aged 94. He was an extraordinary man, and lived a life rich in adventure, happiness and love.

The son of the late James Theodore Williams and Luta Armstrong Powers Williams, he began life in Newnan, Georgia. After graduating from The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1941, he married his childhood sweetheart, the late Katherine Hutchinson Williams, in 1943. During World War II, he served in the Civil Aeronautics Association and as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After the war he returned to Newnan to continue what became a long and distinguished career as a civil engineering consultant specializing in municipal water systems management and elevated water tanks.

After the death of his first wife, he married Dorothy Duckworth Todd in 1976. Theirs has been a long and beautiful marriage, centered with great love, kindness, and joy around the lives of their eight children. They moved to Dunwoody in 1976, and at the time of his death, lived in Alpharetta.

Throughout his life, he loved and cherished his family absolutely. Surviving are his beloved wife, Dorothy Duckworth Williams; his eight proud and loving children, Katherine Williams Robinson, Margaret Williams Waterman, Caron Todd DuRant (Jim), James Ambrose Williams Jr. (Linda), Michael Theodore Williams (Robin), William Augustus Todd, David Todd (Terri), and Pamela Todd LaVangie (Gregg). He is also survived by his 14 devoted grandchildren: James DuRant, Christopher Robinson, Elizabeth DuRant Pusser (Buddy), Katherine Robinson Hutton (Richard), Will Waterman (Jean), David DuRant, Clay Williams, Kyle Williams, Nate Williams, Kailey Williams, Gus Todd, David James Todd, Preston LaVangie, and Jackson LaVangie; and three great-grandchildren, Whit, Hayes, and Belle Pusser. He was predeceased by a brother, Loy Williams, and three sisters, Ollie Williams Jones, Lula May Williams Culpepper and Florine Williams Hubbard.

Jimmy Williams – Daddy, Granddaddy, Grandy, D – was always the gentleman, thoughtful, courteous, and attentive to others. He was also a brilliant man whose interests were varied and deep. He was enthusiastic about symphony music, good jokes, photography, scientific advances, golf and Georgia Tech football. He had many friends throughout his life, and was a constant inspiration to everyone who knew him. It has been a privilege to share life with him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. in Christ Chapel of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, 805 Mount Vernon Highway, NW.
