Mr. Ray Poncela
Retired Battalion Chief Raymond Poncela, age 71, of Griffin, GA, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Brightmoor Hospice surrounded by his family.
Mr. Poncela was born in Tampa, Florida, on June 6, 1942. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Ola Lee Poncela; son, Tommy Poncela; aunt, Julia Strickland. He started his career with the Riverdale Fire Department, obtaining the rank of Battalion Chief before retiring after 34 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Whatley Toland Poncela; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Deborah Poncela; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Ricky Collins; daughter-in-law, Julie Poncela; stepchildren, Teresa and Rob Henry, Sammy and Laurie Toland, Carol Toland and friend, Susan Stubbs; grandchildren, Chase, Nicole, Elizabeth, Bailey, Casey, Melissa, Taylor and Abby; great grandchildren, Skye, Ryker and Levi.
Visitation for Battalion Chief Raymond Poncela will be on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. The committal service with fireman honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
