Mr. Edward Bailey Evans

Mr. Edward Bailey Evans, age 88, of Palmetto, GA, formerly of Newnan, died Feb. 25, 2014. He was born in Coweta County on Aug. 7, 1925, to the late Joseph Bernard Evans and Jessie Cash Evans. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Hazel Thompson Evans, who died four days away from their 67th anniversary. He lived six months and five days after her passing.

Mr. Evans worked as a supervisor at West Point Pepperell after serving in the U.S. Navy in the Aleutian Islands during World War II in aviation ordnance command. His happiest retirement years were spent working at Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home. He was an active longtime member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church, then First Baptist Church of Newnan, and recently he was a member of Providence Baptist Church. At these churches he had taught Sunday school in the children's department, was a deacon, and was a former treasurer of the church.

Mr. Evans was a longtime Boy Scout supporter, serving on the Coweta County Scout Council for over 20 years and a Scout Master for over 20 years. He was especially proud that two of his great grandsons are now in Cub Scouts. Mr. Evans loved his Lord, his church, and his family.

Surviving are his daughters, Marie Lyle and her husband Don of Palmetto, and Edwina Cowgill and her husband Dave of Newnan; sister, Laurine Jackson of Newnan; brother, Bobby Joe Evans of Stockbridge; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Gene Tyre and Rev. Jerry Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Thursday, 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Evans may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 6402 Campbellton-Redwine Road, Chattahoochee Hills, GA 30268.
