Mr. Frank Douglas Koran

Mr. Frank Douglas Koran, 90, of St. Simons Island, formerly of Tifton, GA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Nov. 9, 2013.

Fr a n k wa s bo r n i n Youngstown, Ohio, to Frank and Mary Kayati Koran on July 26, 1923. As a youth in the Boy Scouts, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from South High School in Youngstown in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1943. In 1947 he graduated from Ohio State University with a BS degree in education and a major in engineering drawing. He was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa and Epsilon Pi Tau honor societies. He was a sports enthusiast, especially college football, and remained a loyal Buckeye fan throughout his life.

He was married to the late Willa Lee (better known as Bill) and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage, until her death on May 12, 2011. Frank taught engineering drawing at Ohio State University for one year, then he joined Saramar Aluminum Corporation in Warren, Ohio, and served as plant manager from 1953- 1956. The family moved to Newnan, GA, in 1956, where Mr. Koran became vice president of manufacturing with William L. Bonnell Company until 1965. In 1966, the Korans moved to Tifton, Georgia, and Mr. Koran established Tifton Aluminum Company, employing approximately 650 people. He retired as president of Tifton Aluminum in 1987.

After retirement, Frank and Bill were able to travel the world and spend summers at their family home on Lake Erie in Ashtabula, Ohio, where they had wonderful times with family and friends.

Frank served as a member of Tift General Hospital Authority. He was also an ABAC Foundation Board Member from 1970-1989. He served as president of the United Fund of Tift County (1971), the Tifton Rotary Club (1972 -1973), and the Southwest District Boy Scouts of America 1976 and 1977 and was a Silver Beaver Award recipient. He served as president of the Tift County Chamber of Commerce in 1978. Frank was also a member of the Rotary Club of Tifton, the B.P.O. Elks and Springhill Country Club in Tifton. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tifton.

Frank was predeceased by his wife, his parents and his sisters, Waldean Thorndale and Dorothy Pezzuto.

He is survived by his four sons, Walter Koran (Joan Lewis) of St. Simons Island, Bill Koran (Janna Bush) of Port St. Joe, FL, David Koran (Gay Turner Koran) of Newnan and Jon Koran (Tammy Ross Koran) of Tifton; and his grandchildren, Kansas and husband Jeffrey Dowdy, Samantha, Will and Katherine Koran; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the Bowen-Donaldson Funeral Home, 420 Love Ave., Tifton, GA 31794.

The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice for their loving care and eternal gratitude to Sherrie Sims for seven years of extraordinary assistance to the Koran family.
