Col. (USA Ret) Charles William "Chuck" Crawford

Col. (USA Ret.) Charles William "Chuck" Crawford, 78, of Sharpsburg, GA passed away at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital on July 26, 2013.


Chuck was born March 17, 1935, in Akron, Ohio, and grew up in Moran, Kansas. Enlisting at 18, he served 32 years in the United States Army, receiving numerous decorations and citations, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star. Upon his retirement from service in 1986, Chuck went on to work an additional ten years as Assistant County Administrator of Coweta County. For 35 years, Chuck and his wife, Willie, had been actively involved in breeding and showing Great Danes. Chuck served as both president and treasurer of the Great Dane Club of the Mid-South, board member to the Great Dane Club of America, treasurer of the Newnan Kennel Club, and treasurer of the Griffin, Georgia, Kennel Club. He was also an Obedience Trial judge for the American Kennel Club.

Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Crawford Jr., who was of Akron, OH; his mother, Alice (Earnst) Billau and step-father Harry Billau, who were of Iola, KS; and his sister, Marcia (Crawford) Lindsey, who was of Beaumont, TX. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of nearly 52 years, Wilma (Willie) Crawford of Sharpsburg, GA; his son, Brian Crawford of Cordova, AK; his daughter, Linda (Crawford) Frederick and son-in-law Dave Frederick of Royston, GA; two grandsons, David Frederick of Athens, GA, and Andrew Frederick of Sylva, NC; and sister, Dorothy (Crawford) King of Casper, WY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

A Veterans Day memorial honoring Chuck's life and service is planned for 2 p.m. on Nov. 11 at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, GA. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Newnan, GA. After the interment service, the family invites everyone to a reception at the Asa M. Powell Sr. Expo Center.
