Mrs. Hazel Milam Harper
Mrs. Hazel Milam Harper entered into God's kingdom on Oct. 6, 2013, after some years of declining cardiac health.
She was born in 1917 in Heard County, Ga., to the late Ferrol & Mattie (Kee) Milam, and married John Dalton "J.D." Harper in 1933. They moved from Arnco mill village to Newnan in 1949, where she began working as a sales assistant at McConnell's 5 & 10 store.
In a day when female executives were rare, she rose to become a regional manager for the Cato's clothing chain. After many years of management with Kessler's Department Store, she retired at the age of 72 to provide full-time care for her husband, who suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. She devoted herself to his care until his death in 1991.
In her later years, she was vibrant and active. She remained independent until the age of 96, and inspired many in her church and community with her enthusiastic homemaking, cooking and gardening.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from noon to 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, GA 30263 with the service at 2 p.m. in the McKoon Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Park in Newnan.
Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.mckoon.com.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Ken Goodroe, Barbara and Albert Pick; her son, Stanley; her beloved friend, Michael Eurey; her sisters, Mrs. Freida Gladney and Mrs. Jane Fuller; many nieces and nephews and dear sisters-in-law.
Her family will be forever grateful for their time together here and when they meet again.
