Mrs. JoAnn Ruth Martin Miller
Mrs. JoAnn Ruth Martin Miller, age 89, of Newnan and formerly of Jackson County, Georgia, died August 11, 2013. She was born in Washington, D.C., the third oldest of eight children to parents Irving and Ruth Keller Martin.
She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings and her son, Kenneth Wayne Miller.
Mrs. Miller was a graduate of Central High School in our nation's capital. She earned a nursing degree from the Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She was a veteran of World War II, having served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.
Mrs. Miller raised five children while pursuing her civilian nursing career in Arlington, Virginia, and later in Athens, Georgia. She was an accomplished seamstress and athlete. She loved to travel and visited such places as Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Australia. She was a Girl Scout leader. For many years she volunteered and served on the board of directors at the Sandy Creek Nature Center in Athens. She used her sewing skills as a volunteer at the Athens Council on Aging.
She will be missed by those she left behind. She is survived by four children, Robert Miller of Jesup, Donna (Dan) Dietz of Newnan, Bruce Miller of Athens and Karen Miller of Athens; four granddaughters, Jennifer (Rafael) Nieves, Joni (Billy) Akins, Courtney Miller and Stacey (Chad) Develle; and 'the light of her life' great-grandson Graysen Nieves.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Savannah Court of Newnan and to Gaye, Pam and Betty of Gentiva Hospice for providing comforting care.
Inurnment at the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery is planned.
