Mr. James C. Berry Jr., 88, of Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Southwest Christian Hospice. He was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Covington, GA, to the late James C. & Ada Cornelius Berry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife of 60 years, Dorothy “Dot” Causey Berry.
The Berrys lived in the West End section of Atlanta. James attended Boys High School in Atlanta and served in the Navy during WWII. After serving his country, he moved back to Atlanta where he began working at the Atlanta State Farmers Market as a produce broker. He and a partner bought Merrin Cravens Produce Company, where he retired in 1986 after 35 years.
Mr. Berry and his family moved to Newnan in 1967 and joined the First Baptist Church. He was an active member of the church and served in many ministries, including the AO House and the Board of Deacons. He was known throughout the state and country for his tireless work as a member of The Gideons International. He traveled throughout the world on behalf of The Gideons and over the years served as an International Extension Agent and held every Georgia office, including president, in his over 55 years with the organization.
The funeral is Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Newnan with Dr. Jimmy Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The visitation is Saturday evening between 5 - 8 at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan.
