Mr. William J. Griffin Sr. passed away Oct. 23, 2012. Born in Stewart County, GA, on Dec. 18, 1918, Mr. Griffin spent most of his life in Coweta County.
He was a long-time and faithful member of the Greater Mt. Zion AME Church. He began a life-long career in education, retiring in 1981 as principal of Westside Elementary School. After his retirement, he remained active in civic and community service. He passed away peacefully at his residence, Savannah Court Assisted Living Facility, Newnan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelda Rice Griffin; brother, Harvey Griffin; and sister, Robbie S. Wright. He is survived by a son, William Griffin Jr. of College Park, GA; daughter, Wilma (Raymond) G. Johnson of Atlanta, GA; stepson Ralph (Charalene) Rice of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Natalie (Steven) Generally, Fairburn, GA; and sister, Marie Robinson of Pensacola, FL.
He also leaves to cherish his memory two great-grandsons, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Nov. 3, 11 a.m., at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home, 168 Greenville St., Newnan, GA; 770-253-1607. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greater Mt. Zion AME Church, 12 Richard Allen Dr., Newnan GA 30263; or the Gentiva Hospice, 2525 Highway 34 East, Newnan, GA 30265.
