Northgate’s boys tennis team is headed to next week’s Class AAAA state tournament for the first time in school history after the Vikings earned a 4-0 victory in the first round of Monday’s Region 3-AAAA tournament.

Needing one win to qualify for state, Northgate’s boys dominated Dutchtown led by 6-0, 6-1 efforts by both Hayden Victer at No. 3 singles and Cole Chenowith and C.J. Evans at No. 2 doubles.

Also adding victories over Dutchtown were Domonic Gonzalez (6-0, 6-3) at No. 2 singles and Derek Kinsch and Cole Stephens (6-0, 6-2) at No. 1 doubles. Vikings No. 1 singles player Jordan Chastain was well ahead of his match 6-2, 4-1 when play was finally stopped.

Northgate’s boys dropped matches in the double-elimination event to No. 2 state-ranked Starr’s Mill (18-3) and Union Grove (16-2).

First-round state tournament matches begin next week. Newnan’s girls and East Coweta’s boys will host opponents from Region 1-AAAAA. Newnan’s boys and East Coweta’s girls open on the road.
