Konos Academy presents Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado this evening at 7. Several Coweta students are part of the cast. The production takes place at New Hope Baptist Church, South Campus at the corner of Hwy 74 and Hwy 85 south of Peachtree City and Fayetteville.
In this famous farce, the leader of all Japan, The Mikado, has made flirting a crime punishable by death. A tailor named Ko-Ko (John Thacker and Daniel Blanchard) is in jail for flirting, but is raised to the exalted rank of "Lord High Executioner" in the hopes that no one will be executed, since he would have to cut off his own head first.
Ko-Ko has three young wards: Yum-Yum (Susanna Shivers and Anna Poole), Pitti-Sing (Savannah Lee and Kiona Davis), and Peep-Bo (Andie Thacker and Ann Moore of Newnan), and he plans to marry Yum-Yum when she returns from boarding school. But the son of the Mikado, Nanki-Poo (James Pollard and Marc Bohler), who is hiding from his father disguised as a wandering minstrel, also admires Yum-Yum.
A cast of 70 high school students tells this topsy-turvy tale of romance and politics. Famous songs from the operetta include "A Wandering Minstrel." "Three Little Maids," and "I've Got a Little List." The Mikado is directed by Dana Spears with Music Director Denise Shivers. Pianists are Leeaura Markum and Steve Shivers.
Tickets are available at the door for $5. Konos Academy, a non-traditional Christian school, is under the direction of Charles and Carole Thaxton.
