February is all about fun for families. There are plenty of ways for families to spend time together including the following area events:
• All mothers and daughters are invited to a free Valentines Party at ArtWorks on the Square in Fayetteville, 107 Stonewall Ave. The party will be from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. Come make cute fleece hats for American Girl dolls while enjoying Valentine desserts and drinks, and viewing the new fashion sets created for this spring and summer.
• Need ideas for the upcoming winter break from school? The Carnegie Library Foundation presents historian and author Dr. Annette Laing in "Could You Be a Victorian Kid?" on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Newnan Carnegie Library.
In a day of fun role-play, kids learn first-hand what it was like to work in a factory, enter a British workhouse (just like Oliver Twist), and go to school in the Victorian era. They also visit the Great Exhibition of 1851, the first-ever world's fair, and sample Victorian foods. Tickets are $25 each, and available at the Carnegie Library, 1 LaGrange St. and Scott's Bookstore on the Court Square.
Other Carnegie library events the week of winter break include a President's Day program, "A Salute to George Washington." The program will be Monday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m., children can watch the movie, "The Smurfs." Call 770-683-1347 to reserve a spot for programs, or for more details.
• A Coca-Cola Space Science Center Observing Night will be held Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Join presenters from Coca-Cola Space Science Center (Columbus University) at the F.D. Roosevelt State Park amphitheater on Highway 190 in Pine Mountain to view the stars above. The evening will include star talks, star maps, and viewing of the night sky. Parking is $5. • Who knew fungus could be fun? Cochran Mill Nature Center near Palmetto will have Fungus Amongus as its February's Homeschool Day program. The workshop will be held Feb. 20 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Unveil the mysteries of mushrooms! Find out what they are, how they grow, join in a dissection lab and mushroom hunt. Discounted indoor mushroom growing kits will available for purchase for $12. The program is for homeschooled children in first through twelfth grades. The nature center is located at 6300 Cochran Mill Rd., Palmetto. Cost for the fun class is $5 per participant (including parents). The fee for nature center members is $3 per participant.
