Cleanup at 64 Ishman Ballard Road should begin in the next few days, following a unanimous vote of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners.
The commissioners voted Tuesday night to award a bid for cleanup and demolition of the property. The low bidder was Horton's Inc., and the bid amount was $11,400.
That amount includes removal of tires on the property but does not include the "tipping fees" for the debris, which will be deposited at the county's landfill. Coweta County will be waiving the tipping fees, said Assistant County Administrator Kelly Mickle.
However, the amount of the waived fees will be tracked by the county "in order to include those as part of the lien against the property," Mickle said.
Under the terms of the bid, work is to begin within five days of the bid award and be completed in five days, weather permitting.
The work by Horton's will complete the cleanup of the site, located near the intersection of Ishman Ballard Road and the Hwy. 34 Bypass. The county has already removed asbestos from the site.
The site consists of four old houses that have become dilapidated and overgrown. The area has become a popular dump site over the years, and county officials haven't been able to get the property owners -- the heirs of the late owner -- to clean up the property.
Commissioner Al Smith got serious about cleaning up the site last summer.
"If you would go out and look at the location, you would agree with me that it is a disgrace to have this in Coweta County," Smith said in August.
"I appreciate everybody's work on this," said Commissioner Tim Lassetter before the vote Tuesday. "It's one of those situations that has taken longer than any of us wish it would have. I'm glad to see" the site will finally be cleaned up.
