A Cinco de Mayo — May 5 — party is set in Grantville Saturday, said Mayor Jim Sells.
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican Army (David) of 4,000 defeated the French Army (Goliath) of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico. This was their Yorktown, symbolizing national pride and unity, notes Sells.
“We are going to have a party Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. downtown,” he said. “Bring your blanket, your kids, your neighbors and your cooler. Bring your portable grill if you like.”
Those attending are invited to set up in the park and grass on Main Street, he said.
“Grantville is a diverse community. Let’s listen to Latino music,
visit with our neighbors and fellow citizens, and have some fun,” Sells said. “Forget high gas prices. Let’s make our city a place to be!”
Sells noted that the Grantville City Council has just given the Downtown Development Authority $2,000 to renovate the downtown park. “We are going to sell 50/50 raffle tickets to help raise funds for the DDA,” he said.
As this is a first, a local businessman has guaranteed a minimum purse of $100 for the raffle, Sells said. “It will go up to 50 percent of ticket sales with $100 as a minimum. The other 50 percent goes to the DDA.”
He invited everyone to get to know the DDA and their plans for Grantville. They also are seeking volunteers to join in the visioning, planning and implementing of a better Grantville.
Sells added that many things are coming to downtown Grantville — a restaurant, a coffee shop, Zumba, Karate, and a game room for kids are already under way, he said.
“We’re going to have fun, develop downtown Grantville, and beat high gas prices right here at home,” Sells said. “This event will help us prepare and get ready for our next event, Memorial Day, Monday, May 28,” he added.
