Mrs. June Poole Stevens (Junie) passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2012. She was 89 years old and a resident of Decatur Christian Towers in Decatur, Georgia. Junie previously lived in Griffin, Georgia with her family and operated a children’s day care center.
She was born on June 6, 1923, in London, England. She met her late husband Joe while serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II. She came to the United States in 1948 and lived in Luthersville, Georgia, until 1961.
She is survived by her sister, Marelle Russell of Sydney, Australia; her four children and their spouses, Glenda and Bill Montgomery of Eufaula, Alabama, Daryl and Sherrie Stevens of Griffin, Merilee and Roger Ledford of Stone Mountain, and Cheryl and Richard Jones of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Lee, Derek Clay, Brooke, Curt, and Lindsey Stevens, Daniel Ledford, Amy Dewberry, Mark Ledford, Kelli Crocker, Ryan and Alex Jones; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18. A reception will follow the memorial service at Decatur Christian Towers, 1438 Church Street, Decatur, GA 30030. In lieu of flowers, donations to Junie’s favorite charities in her honor would be greatly appreciated. They are Special Olympics of Georgia, Easter Seals, Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and The Humane Society of the United States.
