If you’re looking for a tax break, there’s one available the next two days throughout Georgia.

After a two-year hiatus, the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday weekend began at 12:01 today and continues through midnight Saturday.

Everyone shopping today and Saturday will not have to pay sales tax on exempt items.

The major exemptions are clothes and shoes that cost less than $100 per item, school supplies that cost under $20 an item, and personal computers and computer accessories that cost less than $1,000 per item.

If the items you purchase cost more than the exempt amount, you must pay sales tax on the entire cost of the item.

If you have questions about exempt items, go to the Georgia Department of Revenue website -- etax.dor.ga.gov/ -- and click on the Georgia Sales Tax Holiday icon, which gives a list of exempt and non-exempt items.

In the past the sales tax holidays were popular with Georgians, but the holidays were dropped for two years because the state did not want to lose the tax revenue generated during the period.

But for two days (today and Saturday) the holidays are back, and shoppers can take advantage of the break offered. While the holidays were intended for back-to-school savings, they apply to all shoppers.
