It’s cat weekend again at the Coweta County Animal Shelter.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today (Saturday), the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society is offering adoption assistance for adult cats, and two-for-one kitten adoptions at the shelter, located at 91 Selt Road, off Hospital Road near Evans Middle School.

This is the third adoption event that NCHS has held at the shelter. There have been a lot of kittens born this year, and a lot of cats and kittens have ended up at the shelter.

The humane society will be offering $50 toward the adoption of an adult cat, and kittens will be buy one, get one free, said Linda Earhart, cat foster coordinator for NCHS.

All animals adopted from the shelter, which is operated by Coweta County Animal Control, are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Adoption fees are typically $70 for cats, or $45 if the cat had been spayed or neutered when it arrived at the shelter. Dog adoption fees are $120 or $55 for previously altered animals, plus $6 for the Bordatella shot.

Last month’s event went really well, Earhart said. There were 22 cats and kittens adopted that Saturday. But even better, “it seems to carry over that week even without the special deal,” Earhart said. She said that Major Steve Orr, shelter manager, “said they had adopted out over 100 cats, kittens, dogs and puppies within two weeks of the event.”

Because of the large number of kittens at the shelter, there is also a need for donated kitten food, said Earhart.

“Any donation of kitten food, especially canned, would be appreciated,” Earhart said. “The kittens are having to eat low-quality adult food and it is a crucial time for them to grow into strong healthy adults. Even a higher quality adult food would help the kittens,” she said.

The large number of kittens being brought to the shelter, or picked up by animal control, illustrates the need for people to spay or neuter their pets.

There are several low cost and convenient options for spaying and neutering in Coweta.

“There are even some free programs available for people who aren’t able to afford the low-cost alternatives,” Earhart said.

The HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic, owned and operated by NCHS, is located in Avery Park off U.S. Highway 29 North. Cat spays are $55 and neuters are $45. There is even a $25 spay surgery and rabies vaccine for feral cats that are brought in in a trap.

Dog spays are $70, $75, and $80, depending on weight, and neuters are $60, $65, and $70.

There is no extra charge for females that are pregnant or in heat. Low cost vaccines can also be given at the time of surgery.
