New standards crucial step to cut pollution

Your May 27 editorial “Hot days often mean unhealthy air outside” correctly highlighted the dangers of air pollution as the hottest days of the year quickly approach.

We can certainly help improve our air quality on a personal level by shopping locally, carpooling and reducing our vehicle use, but it’s also important to promote change on a greater scale.

We know that global warming will likely lead to even higher levels of dangerous smog pollution in the future, and that carbon pollution from cars is a big part of the problem.

Fortunately, the Obama Administration is taking steps against these hazards, by developing new carbon pollution and fuel efficiency standards for vehicles in model years 2017-2025. These standards would require new vehicles to attain 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

This crucial step to reduce carbon pollution is essential in the movement towards cleaner air.
