As summer nears and pools open and water guns get loaded, it’s a good time to remind people the city of Newnan’s water fountains are for the eyes only.
That means no drinking from, or swimming in, said fountains, such as those at Greenville Street Park and the city park at Temple Avenue and Jackson Street that includes the Veterans Memorial Plaza.
“Basically, we ask parents not to let children go into the fountains,” said city spokeswoman Gina Snider. “It’s for safety reasonsâ ¦ they are not designed for swimming and not chemically treated for that.”
Parents and older kids will get a reminder, but if the police find repeat offenders, those individuals could get a ticket for trespassing.
There are other options, including the proverbial neighbor with a pool. Or, if your kids just seem to have a little too much energy now that’s school is out, you can always hand them a shovel and tell them to start digging.
While the city doesn’t want citizens in the fountains, the city’s pool is just fine.
The city pool at Willie Lynch Park, 23 Richard Allen Drive, opens today. While it’s owned by the city, it’s run by the Coweta County Recreation Department.
Cost is $2 per day or $25 for a season pass. The 4,200-square-foot pool includes four lanes for recreational lap swimming, a large zero-entry area, a mushroom water feature and a splash fountain for children.
Hours are Monday through Friday, 1-7 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-6 p.m.
And if you just want to get wet but not submerge, the splash pads at Newnan Utilities’ Carl Miller Park on Sewell Road are open as well.
For those who want the wetness but not the burn, you can also check out memberships at The Summit Family YMCA on Ga. Highway 34 East.
