When you get into your vehicle, do you buckle your seat belt? The vast majority of travelers -- maybe close to 90 percent -- do indeed buckle their seat belts as the law in Georgia requires, but there’s still a small percentage who do not buckle up.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has a message for those who are not buckled -- you may get a traffic ticket.

The state office is launching its annual vacation season “Click It or Ticket” seat belt campaign on May 21. Officers in our local area and throughout the state will be on the lookout for drivers and passengers who are not buckled.

“Our police officers, state troopers and sheriff’s deputies are prepared to ticket anyone who isn’t buckled up,” said Harris Blackwood, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

“Click It or Ticket” comes around in May each year in Georgia. It’s the time schools are finishing the year. That signals the start of the vacation season when many families and individuals will be taking to the highways traveling to their favorite vacation spot for a time of leisure and relaxation.

The time between Memorial Day (May 28 this year) and Labor Day (Sept. 3) is the height of the vacation season, and public safety officials will stay busy during that time enforcing the seat belt law and other traffic laws. They also will be particularly looking out for drivers who are impaired by alcohol or other substances.

We all should be thankful that our state and our local communities make this concerted effort to make our roadways as safe as they possibly can. It’s a fact travelers are safer when they buckle their seat belts. Buckle up. And don’t drink and drive -- period.
