Mr. Udolphus Daulton “U.D.” Payne, 91, of Newnan, GA, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Avalon Health & Rehabilitation following years of declining health and a brief illness.
Known to many as “UD” or “Dault” he was born and raised in Carroll County before moving to Coweta County prior to WWII, where he would meet his future wife of 59 years, Orrie Nellie Gray of Newnan.
During the war, he served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 crew member and was forced to bail out over Holland in December 1943. He was a POW at Stalag XVIIB in Krems, Austria, until liberated by Patton’s Army in May 1945. After the war, he married, raised a son, and worked at East Newnan Mills, Playtex, and Marathon/American Can/ James River until he retired in 1981.
He then worked part-time at Otasco in Newnan for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife and is survived by his son, David (Shirley) Payne; granddaughter, Jennifer (Jonathan) and grandson Chris (Karee), four great-grandsons and a great-granddaughter along with brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral is Friday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Rev. L. B. Rooks officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The visitation is Thursday evening between 6 - 8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St. Newnan, GA.
