Let's all join in to salute public safety workers

This is Public Safety Appreciation Week in our community, and we are all urged to show our appreciation for the hundreds of men and women who work day and night to serve us and protect us and our possessions.

It’s great when a community cause has a champion to promote that cause and push us all to recognize the importance of that cause. When it comes to public safety in our community, Norma Haynes is that champion. She helped establish Public Safety Appreciation Week nearly 15 years ago, and she works tirelessly throughout the year to promote and recognize all of our public safety employees.

Mrs. Norma is particularly proud of the annual Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon held during Public Safety Appreciation Week, when all public safety employees in Coweta are invited to a free lunch at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. That luncheon will be held Friday, and Mrs. Norma expects to serve lunch to about 400 men and women.

The luncheon is not only a time to enjoy good food, but it is a grand time for fellowship around the tables for these people who serve our community.

This luncheon is provided because of the generous support by individuals, businesses and other groups in our community who provide food and money to the cause. Money that is left over after luncheon expenses are paid goes into the Newnan Coweta Public Safety Training Benevolent Fund, which helps public safety personnel in need.

There’s still time to make a donation to this cause, by mailing a contribution to P.O. Box 1113, Newnan, Ga., 30264.

During this special week when our community recognizes its public safety workers, let’s all join in to salute these dedicated and committed public employees. When you see a public safety person — this week and any week — speak to them. Tell them how much you appreciate their service.
