Former Coweta County Commissioner Robert Wood is about to celebrate a milestone birthday, and his 70th birthday celebration will offer a carnival for the entire community.

Family and friends of the longtime political leader are putting together a May 5 bash with the theme “Celebrating 70 Years of Fun, Over-the-Hill From the Past to the Present."

Deloris Wood, Wood's wife, said "everyone is invited to join the family and friends" at the celebration to be held from noon-5 p.m. at the Clay-Wood Recreation Community Center, 135 Heery Road.

There will be "an old-fashioned, fun carnival," Mrs. Wood said. Children of all ages with parents or other adult are welcome to join in the fun.

"There will be food, entertainment, games and prizes," Mrs. Wood said.

Wood served on the Coweta County Commission for 12 years, leaving office after not seeking re-election in 2004. He has long been involved in business locally and is a minister.

In a 2005 interview, Wood reflected on what being a county commissioner meant to him. "I like being able to help and care for a large number of people without making personal one-on-one contact, because you can do more," he said.

Being a commissioner "gives you a set of tools that you can carry that responsibility out massively, rather than individually one-on-one," he said. "You try to make decisions that are going to favorably affect the whole community."

An opening ceremony at the birthday celebration will be held at noon. To confirm attendance or for information, call 770-251-6372.
