Our readers chime in on bypass construction

Editor’s note: Here is a sampling of readers’ comments to our Wednesday editorial, “In about 111 days, travel should improve on bypass, Bullsboro.” DOT says by July 31 the bypass construction should be complete. When that work is complete, traffic lights on Bullsboro Drive are expected to again be synchronized. These comments were posted on times-herald.com

-- July 31 will be a happy day for store owners along the bypass. At least it is not costing motorists hundreds of dollars a week while this highway robbery is going on.

-- Coweta only seems to feel the pain of road work recently because it hasn’t had much experience with it or the congestion to get people “steamed.” The road work here has actually been carried out quickly and in a very orderly manner, in my opinion. Perhaps adapting to the circumstances is a better solution than starting a countdown calendar. Either leave earlier or determine not to be in a rush.

-- What we need is another 1 percent tax to make all this ineptness better. Vote no on TSPLOST, until government and contractors learn to handle the money they have now.

-- Slow drivers — not the construction — are to blame for the traffic delays on the bypass. Time after time I’ve been behind drivers going 30 mph on a 45-50 mph road. If you cannot at least go the minimum speed, stay on the side roads.

-- Really? There are huge signs everywhere on the bypass stating the speed limit is 35, and I’ve never encountered people actually doing 35.

-- How many times have we been told “just a few more months”? The majority of the time I ride the bypass there is only a handful of workers doing anything. You have to love those shovel-ready jobs. Maybe we need to privatize our road systems. Anything government touches turns to crap.

-- If all the barrels, reduced limit signs and silt curtains are removed on July 31, I’ll believe. If not, it is just another boondoggle by GDOT and the contractors who have not used all U.S. citizens in order to increase their profit margins. This was tax money, folks. What we have witnessed is a gigantic waste of it. I traveled through the most complete part of it (Highway 70 to Highway 16 West), and I don’t believe that part will be finished, much less the areas from U.S. 29 to Highway 34 that are less complete. The economic impact of this delayed project is tremendous. Please be vocal about this mess. Vote no on TSPLOST.
