Alabama’s Chris and Roger Arnett slid into Senoia Raceway Saturday night similar to a gang of old west bandits. The Arnett’s stole the show sweeping the top spots in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets feature race.
Racin’ Jason Williams won for the second straight week in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models while Tim Collier picked up his first win of the season in the Mini Stocks.
Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran flexed his racing muscle again as he claimed his 11th win of the year and 29th in two Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock seasons.
Opelika, Alabama’s Chris Arnett jumped out to the early lead over West Point’s Charlie Garrett.
Arnett’s father, Roger Arnett, followed closely in third with Newnan’s Scott Duffey and Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland in fourth and fifth.
In one of the better races all season at the 3/8ths mile bull ring, Garrett was challenged by Roger Arnett with Kirkland working past Duffey on lap four. Opelika’s Kelly Leonard joined the battle on the next lap tapping Duffey’s rear quarter panel.
A caution for Garrett bunched the field back together and created a classic father son duel for the lead position.
Roger Arnett would get alongside his son Chris several times over the final 12 laps, but each time Chris would move back to the front. A few times Chris would throw a block pinching dear old dad down along the front stretch concrete.
When the checkers flew over the field, Chris had his second Senoia Raceway win of the season. His father would end up second ahead of Dow Kirkland, Kelly Leonard and Grantville’s Blake Griffin.
“That was a fun race,” said Chris Arnett. “I am sorry that I had to push my dad low a few times, but he is always fun to race with.”
It was fun once again for Locust Grove’s Racin Jason Williams. The Mid-Season Points Champion for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models clocked in the fastest for the third time in 2012 placing him on the pole. But, Stockbridge’s Trey White caught him sleeping on the initial start and shot out to the lead from the outside pole.
Williams chased him down and retook the top spot on lap three when White slid high in turn one. That was all Williams needed as he cruised to his second straight win ahead of White and Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris.
Brooks young gun Magic Matt Dooley was fourth. In the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature, Brooks’ Mike Jenkins opened with a side by side race with Jackson’s Bill Brown.
They raced clean bumping only once for the first couple of laps before Jenkins finally edged in front for the lead.
Jenkins would later develop problems ending his fight for the win.
The same was true for a strong showing by Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson.
The Newnan veteran’s woeful season continued as he blew an engine on lap 12 while running second.
Everyone’s misfortune allowed for the division’s constant threat to slide into the number one spot and then set sail for his 11th trip to victory lane.
Carrollton’s Clifton Moran notched the win and took home the mid-season title over Bill Brown.
LaGrange’s Hill would later drop out of the race with a broken rear end while Collier would have his hands full with Newnan’s Dorough Bright.As the field charged down the back stretch on the white flag lap, Gary Parker was pinched to the high side climbing the back stretch wall and almost overturning his No. 13 Ford Mustang.
The field scattered to avoid collecting his mount as he slid down to the bottom of the track.The field came through the final turn and Collier was the first man to cross under the checkered flag keeping Bright in second place. Newnan’s Bobby Arnold was third ahead of Douglasville’s Matt Thompson and McDonough’s Josh Copeland.
This Saturday, July 14, Senoia Raceway hosts its series within a series as the Jewel Series returns for its second leg of the season.
