Mr. Leo Erwin Oliphant

Mr. Leo Erwin Oliphant, 90, passed away on June 23, 2012, at his home in Newnan.

Mr. Oliphant was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Charles City, Iowa, to the late Forrest F. Oliphant & Freda Hazel Carlen Oliphant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Richard, Margaret, Shirley, and Jeanetta.

Mr. Oliphant graduated from Edgemont High School (SD) in 1940. He was trained as a surgical technician and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the UK, France and Germany. After his discharge, he attended the University of Arkansas. He married Lila Joan Chastain on March 16, 1946, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He was employed as a civilian in the U.S. Army. His career began as the administrator of the Igloo Hospital at the Black Hills Army Depot (SD). He transferred and moved his family to Atlanta, GA, in 1964, serving at Fort Gillem and Fort McPherson, and retiring in 1981.

In retirement, he built the home that he and Lila have lived in for the past 23 years. He also made most of the finely crafted furniture for the home and made furniture for his children and grandchildren. His children believed that he could make or repair anything. He was a member of Southpointe Church for 48 years. He was a supporter and friend of Heritage Christian School where Lila has been a teacher for 47 years.

He is survived by Lila Oliphant, his wife of 66 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Alan Egerdahl of Newnan, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Mike Oliphant and Martha Dysart of Hendersonville, NC; daughter, Gale Oliphant of Brasstown, NC; and son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Stacey Oliphant of Newnan, GA; grandchildren and spouses, Lisa & David Glass, Kristen Egerdahl, Sarah & Paul Rivard, Ethan Egerdahl, Forrest & Aino Oliphant, Claire Oliphant, Mark Baker, Michael Baker, Leo & Mandy Oliphant, April Oliphant; 11 great-grandchildren; and extended family in Colorado and Arkansas.

Visitation is planned at Southpointe Church located at 3613 Highway 34 E, Sharpsburg, GA, on Wednesday, June 27 at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Southpointe Church, 3613 Highway 34 E, Sharpsburg, GA 30277.
