By W. WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com Trick-or-treat. Today is Halloween when tots turn into princesses, super heroes, ninjas and Disney characters -- and trade cute smiles for candy. There will be several options for public trick-or-treating, including this morning in downtown Newnan, as well as at a local nursing home and on the grounds of a historic schoolhouse.
Several area churches are also holding events today. For those seeking a spookier treat, this is the final night for Grantville's Little Haunted House this year. The spookhouse features the usual ghouls and goblins along with Grantville actor and writer David Wilson as John Wallace of "Murder in Coweta County" fame. Opportunities for Halloween day fun include: • Downtown Trick-or-Treat, downtown Newnan, 10 a.m.-noon. Main Street Newnan event aimed at pre-schoolers features candy and giveaways -- courtesy of downtown merchants. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times and are encouraged to wear a costume. • Halloween Treats for Kids, Avalon Health and Rehabilitation, 10 a.m.-noon. Parents or grandparents are invited to bring children to Avalon, 120 Spring St., where the residents will be giving out treats. • Trunk-or-Treat, Mary Ray Schoolhouse, Raymond, 5-7 p.m. Vehicles offering treats will be gathered at the historic school -- now a community center -- just off Highway 16 East. • Fall Festival Family Fun Night, First Baptist Church, Newnan, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Funny and silly costumes welcome. • Halloween at the Callaway home, Hills & Dales, LaGrange, 5:30-8 p.m. To participate, enter the Hills & Dales Drive entrance gate. Staff will direct participants as the historic museum continues the custom of giving candy bars to all costumed children. • A Walk In The Park, Fall Festival, Macedonia Baptist Church, Oct. 31, 6-8 p.m. Meet the Get Out Gopher. Games, treats, cakewalk, door prizes. Pizza/drinks free for ages 11 and younger. • Fall Festival, Woolsey Baptist Church, Fayetteville, Oct. 31, 6-8 p.m. Games, candy, cakewalk, Trunk-or-Treat, hotdogs, popcorn. • Fall Festival, Rehoboth Baptist Church, Luthersville, 6-8 p.m. • Harvest Fest, Flat Creek Baptist Church, Fayetteville, 6-8 p.m. Free. • Trick or Treat the Church, Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, Welcome, 6:30 p.m. Trick-or-treaters in the Welcome area can come to Mt. Carmel and pick up a trick-or-treat bag which will contain candy, crafts and other goodies -- along with a contest form for every child. The contest form in the bag will allow each child to submit a drawing to be the church's 2011 Christmas card cover. Drawings are to be turned in at a free pizza party in the church fellowship hall on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. Gift cards will also be given to first, second and third place winners of the drawing contest in addition to having their drawing grace the Christmas card cover. • Hallelujah Night, basement, Greater Mount Zion AME Church, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Free pizza, candy, games and prizes. • Grantville's Little Haunted House, LaGrange Street, Grantville, 7-11 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 15 and younger.
