Suspect remains in jail, charged with stalking estranged wife

By ELIZABETH RICHARDSON erichardson@newnan.com Jamie Heath remains incarcerated at the Coweta County Jail without bond after allegedly stalking his estranged wife, shooting open her door and falsely imprisoning her son, say authorities. Heath, 36, of 26 Meadowview Lane near the Arnco community of western Coweta, was arrested Dec. 26, 2009, after he reportedly illegally entered his estranged wife's apartment, located at 151 Parkway North, Newnan Crossing Apartments.
Heath arrived at the apartment shortly before 2 a.m. and knocked on the door. When no one answered, he used his .45-caliber handgun to shoot the deadbolt off the door, according to Detective-Sergeant Rick Mires of the Newnan Police Department. Heath's 18-year-old stepson was asleep inside when he heard the gunshot and woke up, according to Mires. Heath searched the apartment for his wife, and when he couldn't find her, he made her son call her and tell her to come home. A neighbor heard Heath pounding on the door, followed by the gunshot and called 911. At the same time, Heath's step-son placed the call to his mother and she, in turn, called 911. Responding officers were able to get the scene under control by detaining Heath, according to the detective. Once in custody, Heath became uncooperative and spit on Mires, who used his pepper spray on the suspect. Heath was being transported to the hospital to clean his eyes when he struck an officer as he was being escorted from the police car into the building. Heath started spitting on people again, at which time an officer used a body taser. Heath was charged with criminal interference with government property for damaging the separator bars in the patrol car by kicking them repeatedly, said Mires. He was charged with simple battery for striking a police officer. He was charged with burglary under the Family Violence Act for entering the residence with the intent to commit a felony. He was charged with theft by receiving stolen property because the gun he was using had been reported stolen by the Carrollton Police Department. He was also charged with aggravated stalking, false imprisonment, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Mires said this was the second time Heath has been arrested for incidents involving his estranged wife. In late summer, Heath was arrested for criminal trespass and simple battery for an altercation in which he struck his wife.
