The Division of Health Planning, Georgia Department of Community Health, is now reviewing the application for a Certificate-of-Need for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America of the Southeast Inc.
CTCA is planning a new cancer treatment hospital in Newnan off Newnan Crossing Bypass across from Ashley Park. The site is land owned by developer Stan Thomas' Thomas Enterprises and fronts Interstate 85 south of the J.C. Penney store.
A public notice from the state Department of Community Health shows the application for the $179,767,423 hospital project was filed July 20, deemed incomplete Aug. 3, and then deemed complete Aug. 24. The project contact person for the company is David Kent.
The department is reviewing the proposal under Georgia's health planning law, which seeks to avoid the unnecessary duplication of expensive health care services, equipment and facilities, said Fredia Bradford of the Division of Health Planning, Office of General Counsel.
The department may schedule a public hearing during its review, Bradford said.
However, the department welcomes any comments and would consider them during the review process, Bradford said. Any interested person may submit information concerning the project to: The Georgia Department of Community Health, Office of General Counsel, 2 Peachtree St., NW, Atlanta, GA 30303-3159; www.dch.georgia.gov.
The notice lists a 60-day deadline at Oct. 23 and a decision deadline of Dec. 22.

I'm all ears waiting to hear from the person/people who have a problem with the CTCA. No one can please everyone so I've no doubt the naysayers are out there. So far it's been mighty quiet on that front. From everything I've seen, heard, read, Newnan and Coweta County WELCOMES the CTCA. We want them here and will be glad for the positive effects their presence will have on our community. Let's not let political B.S. get in the way of medial progress. After all, aren't we all talking about HEALTH CARE right now? At some point Piedmont's protests just amount to bad PR for them. Regardless of their objections, they look bad bashing a cancer hospital.

It's not a done deal. The CON process can take months or years depending on opposition and appeals. The DCH will look at the need for a cancer hospital across the metro area, the state and the regoin. It's a huge price tag they also have to consider. I wouldn't expect much opposition from Piedmont unless they are wanting to focus more on cancer services. Look for other cancer hospitals to protest this one.

I would like to see all comments posted both for and against CTCA. I've been hearing a lot of bad things about CTCA and I've not seen any post.

If Piedmont tries to stop the cancer hospital from coming to Newnan, I suggerst that all Coweta County people consider useing Tanner Memorial in Carrollton or W. Ga. Regional in La Grange. It would be a bad mistake on the part of Piedmont to interfear.

I don't think it was Piedmont was the problem. I think it was Newnan Hospital.

as a survivor of cancer this is what is needed in the state as well as the county, traveling to Houston is costly, and when a patient is ill it is hard for all. I would even like to volunter to work at this facility.

I hope Piedmont doesn't try to do anything to stop this hospital from being built like they did Emory Peachtree. Surely this is pretty much a done deal, right?

Yaa! I am so glad there will be another hospital in our area other than the two Piedmonts in Newnan and Fayetteville. Hopefully, CTCA will have a better organization with good management so employees will want to work there and feel good about working there.

I can't say for sure what patients or employees think about CTCA because I don't know anyone who has worked for them or been a patient there. From everything I have read and researched about them though, they really seem like one of the better organizations in the hospital industry. Having been an employee of Piedmont Fayette and knowing employees of Piedmont Newnan, I can say with 100% confidence that they have to be better than Piedmont. I don't think there is anyway the management could be any worse than the management at Piedmont. Healthcare is a business, but there are healthcare leaders who operate with integrity and then there are those that don't. I am hopeing that CTCA will be one of the organizations that do have integrity and will not be like Piedmont. As for the community, CTCA will only bring more prosperity to the area. Whether in housing, retail, restaurants, etc.
