Sony wants to film in Newnan

By Elizabeth Melville

The Newnan Times-Herald

Newnan City Council will consider a request Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at city hall to film "The Wronged Man" -- a Sony Pictures television movie scheduled for broadcast on Lifetime Television in the fall.

The production wants to film in the city, including Court Square businesses and other surrounding downtown locations.

The film, which is based on a true story, is about Prissy Gregory, a legal assistant played by Julia Ormond (of Sabrina and Benjamin Button) who fights for nearly 20 years to free Calvin Willis from an erroneous rape conviction that occurred in 1986 in Shreveport, La.

According to the official request submitted to council, the film would be shot entirely in Newnan and Griffin beginning on Feb. 17 and finishing on March 7. Production crews plan to film Feb. 17-20 and March 5-7. Sony is asking to film at the locations including: Genelle's Beauty Shop, ValuTeachers, The Alamo, Espresso Lane, Lindsey's Realty, Flournoy Office and Bank of Coweta. Producers are still searching for the ideal Newnan home to be that of the main character in the film.

Also Tuesday the city council will consider a request from developers Golden Gate, LLC to withdraw its application to rezone property located between Newnan Crossing Boulevard East and Lower Fayetteville Road. Golden Gate is also requesting a refund of the $1,004.41 application fee.

Newnan rezoned the 8.303-acre property in April 2008 from Townhouse Residential Dwelling Unit to Office and Institutional Low Density District, with some conditions. The preliminary plat showed 21 townhouse units on the site.

In Oct. 2008, The Times-Herald reported a $5 million foreclosure against Golden Gate.

Following the council meeting, the Newnan City Council will hold its annual retreat at the Newnan Utilities Water Cabin off Roscoe Road to discuss any city business, including problems or future projects of interest to the city.
