School system to extend CEC's charter

By Brenda Pedraza-Vidamour

The Times-Herald

The Coweta County Board of Education plans to approve a new 10-year charter for the Central Educational Center at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. at the school system's offices at 237 Jackson St. in Newnan.

CEC's current five-year charter, an agreement between the school system and the state Board of Education, expires at the end of the year.

CEC, located at 160 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, was established as a start-up charter school in 2000. Georgia has distinct types of public charter schools -- from start-ups to whole school system charters -- as well as hybrid models, such as the one to be extended on Tuesday for CEC.

CEC is a career academy charter school, a start-up school with dual enrollment and a career/technical curriculum. The school allows students to earn high school and college credits while choosing a specific area of job skills on which to focus. Besides the school system, CEC has partnered with West Central Technical College and local businesses and industries to offer its curriculum. As a result of its successes, the school serves as a model for other career academies across the nation. One of the most recent discussed replications is development of a Capitol Educational Center in Baton Rouge, La.

In other business, the school board also plans to consider:

* Approval of some revised board policies including adding policy language to allow for the search of a student's cell phone's contents within "reasonable suspicion" limits.

* Appointment of a board member as the Georgia School Board Association's legislative liaison for the 2009 session of the Georgia General Assembly.

* Approval of early payroll dates for November and December because of school holidays. While school personnel are paid on the last working day of the month, the board will consider early paydays on Nov. 21 and Dec. 18, the last working days before the Thanksgiving and Christmas school breaks.

* Approval of flashing/warning lights at 12 schools. While most school within Newnan's city limits have flashing lights, schools in other areas of the county just recently received assistance from the Coweta County Commission to have the lights installed. The school board will vote on adding another $55,000 toward the county's recently approved amount to install the lights at 10 elementary schools and two high schools. Other area schools in the system either have traffic lights, crossing guards or other traffic calming measures already in place.

* Appointments of hearing officers to the school system's Student Tribunal, a group of trained individuals who are charged with hearing the cases of students who face long-term suspension from school.

The school board also plans to recognize Newnan High School for a distinguished achievement award and Dr. Laurie Barron for a Georgia Association of Educational Leaders award. Updates on school finances, construction projects and other administrative matters will also be heard.
