Rural/Metro Ambulance, which provides 911 service to the city of Palmetto and other parts of metro Atlanta, has received an award from the American Heart Association for establishing a STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarctions) system in the metro area.

Piedmont Fayette Hospital is part of the participating hospital network.

The American Heart Association recently presented the award to Rural/Metro Ambulance of Georgia for its role in establishing an improved system of care for patients suffering a heart attack in the Metro Atlanta area.

"This new system allows Rural/Metro crews to alert emergency rooms to have their PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) teams standing by to more quickly provide heart attack patients with balloon angioplasty," said Reginald James, division general manager of Rural/Metro's Georgia operations. "Reducing the wait between 'door to balloon' saves valuable time and improves patient outcomes."

PCI is more commonly known as coronary angioplasty, or balloon angioplasty.

James recognizes Trey Phillips, Rural/Metro's market general manager in the Metro Atlanta area, for his leadership role in getting the system established.
