One-car crash claims life of Sharpsburg teenager

A Sharpsburg teenager was killed Saturday in a single-vehicle accident after losing control of his car and crashing into a tree.
The accident happened around noontime on Major Road, which is west of Minix Road, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.
Sergio Ruben Martin, 18, was westbound on Major Road in a 2007 Toyota Scion when he lost control, Wright said. Martin's car struck a mailbox, came back onto the roadway and then left it again, striking a tree.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Coggin, Martin was trapped in the vehicle and the "fire department had to perform an extensive extrication to remove the patient. The patient was transported to Atlanta Medical Center via air ambulance."
Wright said Martin died at the hospital from his injuries.
"Seat belt was not in use and alcohol is suspected as possibly being involved," Wright said.
This was the first fatality in Coweta County this year.
