The city of Newnan came in 4 percent under budget in 2008, officials announced Tuesday.
City Manager Dick Bolin told the Newnan City Council Tuesday that in 2008 the city brought in 101 percent of its projected revenue. It spent 97 percent.
The largest percentage of the budget was spent on public safety, according to Newnan Public Information Officer Gina Snider. The second largest chunk of the budget was utilized in the Public Works Department.
At Tuesday afternoon's meeting, council approved a 2008 budget amendment request to ensure the final budget matched the actual appropriations and receipt calculated during a recent city audit.
"We ended the fiscal year in the black," said Bolin. He added a word of praise for the various city departments that learned to "do without" in the midst of the economy-driven budget cuts.

The chief said dead zones are no longer problematic for the department, though they will "never be 100 percent rid of them."
