Traffic Fatality

Newnan man dies following two-car crash Saturday

by John A. Winters

A 21-year-old Newnan man died Sunday after a two-car traffic accident Saturday night on Georgia Highway 34 at Fischer Road.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital where they were treated and released a few hours later.

Desmond Jamar Geter was taken to Grady Hospital with a severe head injury after the 9:40 p.m. accident Saturday by ground ambulance because rescue helicopters were unable to fly, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class George Cotton. He was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m. Sunday.

Geter was eastbound on Hwy. 34 in a 2000 Formula Firebird and was in the left turn lane, the trooper said. Geter made a left turn to head north onto Fischer Road and was struck in the passenger side by a westbound 1997 GMC Jimmy driven by Emily Morgan Wilson, 18, of Newnan.

The impact spun Geter's car around and the Jimmy went off to the right and hit a concrete median, causing it to flip over on the driver's side, Cotton said. Emily Wilson, and her sister, 15-year-old Macie Wilson, were able to crawl out the back window.

Emily Wilson complained of pain to her left arm, nose and lip, while her sister had bruising on her back and arms, whiplash and glass in her head, the trooper said. No charges were filed in the accident.

Seven members from the Coweta County Fire Department were at the scene and had to extricate Geter from his vehicle, according to assistant fire chief Jeff Denney.

This is the second vehicular fatality in Coweta County this year.

Sergio Ruben Martin, 18, was westbound on Major Road in a 2007 Toyota Scion when he lost control in an early January accident, according to authorities. Martin's car struck a mailbox, came back onto the roadway and then left it again, striking a tree. He was extricated from his vehicle and flown to Atlanta Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
