Main Street Newnan's last Market Day of the year is Dec. 5.

The Carnegie will have "Movie time" for the kids Dec. 5. The event will start at 10:30 a.m. After the movie, there will be an ornament-making activity for the children beginning at 1 p.m. For more information contact the Carnegie at 770-683-1347.

The annual Newnan Christmas Parade is Dec. 6. The parade starts at 3 p.m. on Temple Avenue and continues into downtown Newnan.

Keep Newnan Beautiful has some tips on going green for the holidays.

Recycle. With all of the extra gift wrapping and gift packaging, it is important to recycle and reuse as much as possible. For example, try to reuse as much gift wrap as possible and save any extra bows, ribbons, or bags that can be reused. Remember that you can always reuse old items or things like newspaper to wrap gifts.

Conserve. To conserve energy, switch out any old Christmas lights with energy-efficient LED Christmas lights. These LED lights are great for decorating both indoors and outdoors and last longer than your standard bulbs. Not just bright and colorful, but good for the environment, too.

Donate. It's the season of giving -- instead of throwing away all of your old clothes and other things this year, donate them instead. This will not only keep your old items out of a landfill, but also into a better home for someone who could use them.

The city Engineering Department would like to remind everyone those things we do every day at home or at our place of business threaten Metro Atlanta's rivers, lakes and streams.

More than 1,000 stream miles in the metropolitan Atlanta area violate state water quality standards. Stormwater runoff is a big part of this problem. This is especially critical in the Atlanta region, where over 98 percent of our water supply comes from surface water sources.

We also depend heavily on our rivers, lakes and streams for recreation, habitat, and preserving the quality of life for everyone to enjoy.

The city of Newnan Animal Control Officer, Cyndi Hoffman, give cold weather tips for pet owners. Brrrr... it's cold outside! The following guidelines will help you protect your companion animals when the mercury drops.

1. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

2. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

3. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

4. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

5. Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him -- and his fur -- in tip-top shape.

6. Like coolant, antifreeze can be a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
