Continuing with the Keep Newnan Beautiful campaign, Cynthia Gill-Wall gives tips on how Newnan residents can reduce their litter. This is Keep Newnan Beautiful's goal. It sounds like a difficult goal, but is actually easy to reach. The best way to achieve a less-littered life is to pick one thing you can do at home to help reduce the litter you create. Once you get into the habit of that one thing, you can add something else. The trick to living a low-litter life is taking it slow. So, start small. Return your plastic bags to the grocery store for recycling every trip. Maybe buy a reusable bag for little trips. Then add in recycling your trash into the recycle bin. Then add in composting your leaves instead of burning them. All of these things are small, easy steps to a greener, litter-free life. Try one today.
The city of Newnan Animal Control Officer, Cyndi Hoffman offers a tip of the week for your four legged best friend. The "Free Ride Home" for your pet program is simple if your dog or cat is picked up by me within the city limits and it has a current tag with owners' current information on it -- your dog or cat will get a free ride home for his first offense. The owner must be home when contacted or the animal would have to go to the local shelter. This also gives the city a chance to verify rabies vaccinations and help the owner correct the problem of the pet getting out
In the ongoing support for the Metro Atlanta "Clean Water Campaign," the City reminds citizens that the highest concentration of pesticides in metro Atlanta's rivers and streams are found during the month of May. Excessive amounts of fertilizer and pesticides will harm fish and other aquatic life as well as degrade the quality of rivers, lakes and streams. Nutrients from fertilizers -- usually phosphates -- enter rivers, lakes and streams and stimulate the growth of algae. Excessive algae growth harms oxygen levels in lakes and ponds, thus killing fish and other aquatic life. Use pesticides (herbicides and insecticides) properly and sparingly in order to help protect the quality of rivers, lakes and streams.
