The Times-Herald

Soaking rains covered north and central Georgia including Coweta County Tuesday, leading to many flood watches, but drier days are ahead.

Some 1.93 inches of rain were recorded by The Times-Herald weather station in downtown Newnan between midnight and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. That amount brings the October total to 7.48 inches, well above normal.

There was a 50 percent chance of more rain Tuesday night, with totals between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch expected.

Despite the heavy rainfall and flood watches, no flooding was reported Tuesday afternoon, and no metro-area rivers were listed as being anywhere near flood stage. Sweetwater Creek near Austell, which experienced the worst flooding in September, was flowing at 2.4 feet Monday afternoon. Flood stage is 10 feet. The creek crested at 30.17 feet on Sept. 22.

However, some minor flooding of Big Creek near Alpharetta is forecast today. Also predicted is some very minor flooding on the Etowah River south of Dawsonville and the Oconee River near Penfield. Suwanee Creek was expected to rise to near flood stage overnight Tuesday.

In extreme southeast Georgia, the Altamaha River at Baxley was .17 of an inch over flood stage Tuesday afternoon. It had crested Sunday at almost 18 inches over flood stage.

According to the National Weather Service, the October average rainfall for the Atlanta area is 3.11 inches.

Since Jan. 1, a total of 47.07 inches has been recorded by The Times-Herald weather station. The average yearly rainfall for the Atlanta area is 50.2 inches.

No 30-year average information is available for Newnan. In 2008, a total of 43.95 inches was recorded by the weather station.

The National Weather Service says today will start out mostly cloudy, but the day will gradually become sunnier -- with a high near 74. Clouds, but no rain, will return tonight. The forecast low is 45.

There's a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. on Thursday. Conditions will be mostly cloudy but warm with a high near 77. A 40 percent chance of showers is forecast for Thursday night, with a low around 59.

Friday's forecast is currently for a 20 percent chance of showers during the day, with cloudy skies and a high near 74. There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday night. There will be mostly cloudy skies and a low around 56.

Currently, there's a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms forecast for Halloween. But Saturday night should be dry and partly cloudy, with a small chance of rain and a low around 47.

Sunday will be mostly sunny, with a high in the upper 60s.
