Metal thefts reported to Newnan Police

By Amy Lott

The Times-Herald

Two teenage suspects apprehended while stealing scrap metal from a downtown Newnan business said they were taking the material for gas money, according to Newnan Police incident reports.

Andrew Scott Cloakey, 19, of 290 Thigpen Road in Newnan, and Jordan Garrett Archer, 18, of 318 Thigpen Road in Newnan, were arrested by Officer Jonathan Caswell shortly after 3:30 a.m. Aug. 4 for stealing scrap metal worth $200 from Arnall Grocery on E. Washington Street.

The subjects reportedly backed up a pickup truck near a trailer and began to load up the material, stopping when a large piece could not be moved off their vehicle. Cloakey and Archer told police they were taking the scrap metal for gas money.

The following unrelated incidents were reported by the Newnan Police Dept.:

n Officer Christopher Robinson was dispatched to Hillwood Circle July 28 around 9:15 a.m. after Ben Moore reported a theft in progress. He said two men had backed a black Jeep Liberty up to the gates of a storage yard owned by Marion Dewey Waldrop and were throwing gutters over the fence, crushing them and placing them in the vehicle. Moore said the suspects fled the scene when he approached. Approximately $500 worth of gutter downspouts were stolen, Waldrop said.

n Jack Wade Smith reported to Officer Christopher Robinson that someone entered his construction site on Jackson Street between 5:10 p.m. July 28 and 7:20 a.m. July 29 and took scrap and full-length pieces of metal.

n Aluminum and copper parts worth around $5,000 were stolen from 381 Corinth Road between Aug. 2 and Aug. 6, according to Officer Christopher Robinson's incident report. Complainant Jon Beasley said a fence chain, two trailer locks and one storage building lock were all cut off.

n According to Officer Christopher Robinson's report, a wire spool trailer valued at $2,000 was cut into several pieces and stolen from Charter Communications on Werz Industrial Blvd. between 5 p.m. Aug. 13 and 10:40 a.m. Aug. 15. Four ladder racks worth $1,000 each were also missing.

n On Aug. 22, Officer Doug Jones was dispatched to Ruth Hill Elementary School in reference to a stolen air conditioning unit. Principal Sean Dye reported all the units were working properly when the last person left campus around 7 p.m. Aug. 21. The following morning, a teacher advised her room's air conditioner was not functioning. Upon inspection by maintenance, it was discovered an entire coil had been taken.

n Marcus Lee Caswell Jr. reported to Officer Zachery Anderson that someone took scrap metal worth $4,000 from 30 Belk Road during the night Aug. 25. Since the same thing happened to him about two months ago, Caswell said he has been sleeping on site. On this occasion, he left the premises from around 2 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
