A Newnan firefighter checks for fire hazards and structural damage at the Exxon convenience store on Franklin Road after a DUI driver smashed through the front window late Monday.

A man was arrested after driving his truck into a gas station convenience store while attempting to run over his girlfriend.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Newnan Police Department and Newnan Fire Department responded to the Exxon gas station at 2 Franklin Rd around 7 p.m. Tuesday after reports the driver smashed into the store and his truck caught on fire, Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough said.

According to Yarbrough, officers discovered the driver, Gregory Sims, 60, had a domestic dispute earlier at a home on Wallace Gray Road with his girlfriend, made some threats to her and she left. He then followed her to the gas station. Once there, Sims rammed his girlfriend’s vehicle with his truck, rammed into another vehicle and attempted to ram her.

Fortunately, Sims’ target was able to get out of the way, but Sims ran his truck into the gas station’s convenience store. Neither the driver or anyone at the gas station was injured, but the truck did cause a substantial amount of damage to the store and created a huge mess, Yarbrough said. The truck’s fire was successfully put out by the fire department.

Sims was charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and for terroristic threats and acts by the CCSO. He was also found to be intoxicated and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol by the Newnan Police Department.
