Locals, visitors get to know Powers' at country store

The Powers' Crossroads Country Store will be open Saturday for its last "power shopping" day before the three-day Powers' Festival on Labor Day Weekend.

The country store is typically open every third Tuesday of the month and the following Saturday. It's stocked with a variety of handmade items by Powers' exhibitors.

Visitors to the store are encouraged to tour the festival grounds, enjoy a glass of iced tea or spend some time on the rocking chairs on the front porch of the store.

Sales at the country store benefit Coweta Festivals, the group of five non-profit organizations that puts on the annual Powers' Festival.

Powers' Crossroads is located on Charlie B. Johnston Road, just off Ga. Hwy. 34 West near the Coweta/Heard county line.

Visitors like to come out and enjoy the fresh air and the peaceful grounds, said Coweta Festival Director Carol Chancey.

"Several people commented that they had been to the festival but not to the grounds, and really enjoyed seeing the grounds without thousands of people. It's very peaceful and serene and pretty," Chancey said. "Some of them drive around and linger and chat and visit and do a little shopping."

"It also gives us a chance to tell them about what is new with the festival and what else is coming up this year," Chancey said. "Our goal is to offer more and more for them to see every time we open."

The country store opened last fall. The crowds aren't huge, but "we have had some really interested folks come out and shop with us and get to know us," Chancey said. "And that's as much a part of what we are doing, by opening the store, as much as anything else -- making the public aware there is more going on on our grounds all year than just the festival."

Hopes are to have more events throughout the year.

The country store won't be open in August, in preparation for the festival. It will reopen in October, and it will be open weekly between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Coweta Festivals is trying to be more than just Powers' Crossroads. The Coweta Classics Film Festival features four movies. "Fluke" will be shown tonight at Dunaway Gardens. "Murder in Coweta County" will be screened Aug. 1 at Newnan's Wadsworth Auditorium, and "Fried Green Tomatoes" will be shown in downtown Senoia Aug. 15.

There are also plans for a Christmas program at the festival site.

Another big change this year is that auditions for the Powers' Rising Star karaoke competition will be held in three locations before the festival.

The first round of auditions will be held Aug. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the LaGrange Mall. Auditions will be at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville on Aug. 8, and at The Boardroom in Newnan on Aug. 22. Auditions will be open to the first 30 competitors, and the top 10 at each location will compete in the finals at the Powers' Festival.

The overall winner of the competition will win a three-hour recording session at Xcessive Sound studio in Franklin.
