Some of those attending the monthly Come To The Table meeting on Monday say they feel speech and written messages conveying racial hatred have increased since Barack Obama became the nation's first African-American president.
Hollande Levinson, the speaker for CTTT's meeting at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, confirmed their feelings. She said there has been a marked increase in hateful, race-oriented speech and writing that started during the latter months of the presidential election process.
Come To The Table seeks to bring together Cowetans of differing racial and ethnic backgrounds. The meetings always begin with a covered dish meal to encourage discussion that leads to friendship among the members.
"It's been a substantial increase," said Hollande "Holly" Levinson, director of the Anti-Defamation League -- Southeast Region, in response to a question. She talked about swastikas being painted on houses in the Atlanta area and on the office of U. S. Rep. David Scott.
Levinson said Scott also has shared messages he had received with ADL officials. "It was the most vile kind of racist stuff you can ever imagine," she said.
"There's been a noticeable increase in the activities of those extremist groups -- particularly on the far right -- since the election of Pres. Obama," Levinson said.
Levinson said the ADL was able to help the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms track down and prosecute Tennessee extremists who planned to assassinate Obama and shoot 88 black high school students. "Likely they would not have been able to reach Pres. Obama, but they probably would have been able to shoot up a high school," Levinson said.
Reggie Harris was particularly troubled at the reaction to Obama's talk to the nation's students on Sept. 8. Many parents in Coweta County and across the country had their children pulled from classrooms where the speech was transmitted via the Internet, and schools in some other areas did not show the speech at all -- even though they had been requested to do so by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
In the speech, Obama encouraged students to study and to take responsibility for their own learning.
Harris noted Obama has a juris doctor degree from Harvard. "The state of Georgia could use -- statistically -- what the president had to say," he said.
Jan Taylor said she felt the president was deserving of at least as much respect as a school principal or the school superintendent who could call a mandatory assembly to speak to students at any time. Regardless of how anyone voted, "he is our president, and we owe him respect because he is our president," she said.
Josephine Rush, who was involved in early Civil Rights activity in Coweta County, said Obama was elected president by the normal process. All Americans "might as well face the fact that Barack Obama is president," she said.
The Anti-Defamation League seeks fair treatment for all people. Levinson said the group's work has three prongs -- protect, investigate and educate. While the main focus of Levinson's talk at Come To The Table was one education, she also touched on the other two facets.
The ADL hears daily from people who need protection from discrimination. The calls may come from Jewish families whose children are being penalized at school for observing religious holidays. A recent call was from a Muslim woman who was told to remove her hijab, a head covering that is part of her religious practice, in order to enter a courthouse.
The investigation wing of the ADL looks at incidents like those at Scott's office. The ADL monitors extremist groups -- "far left, far right, domestic, international," Levinson said.
The education portion of the work is aimed at schoolchildren and at adults. There is a program for law enforcement officers that includes a trip to the U. S. Holocaust Museum and training about hate groups. The training teaches officers to "respect the communities you live and work in," Levinson said.
The main focus of Levinson's talk locally was No Place for Hate, an educational program developed by the ADL that is offered free to schools. "My job is to make sure we have less people to investigation and protect against," she said.

Ok Joe now that we have established you as one of the folks who are blaming blacks for the welfare program. You also have made a statement about how race and poverty demography are equal nationwide now you have to defend it.

There is more whites then blacks on welfare. But the percentage of blacks on welfare compared to the population of blacks is a lot higher. I have lived all over the country it is no different here then it is up north or out west.

You all have every right to your opinions. You even have the right to walk beside people who carry signs of our president made up to look like a witch doctor. You can even support an organization who's leader called The President an Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug. I live in Newnan and have lived almost all over the US. Only down south can you run into another white person and they will tell you a racist joke as if it wouldn't be offensive to you. Racism is part of the fabric of the south. I have taken part in a number of conversations about health care and taxes where white people have blamed black people for the state of welfare and society, even though there are more whites on welfare than blacks. Proof in point to what I am saying is multiple posters on this commentary have voiced frustration with the navigation of race relations because they cant tell what is PC. If you acted decently toward people of other races you wouldn't have to ask that question.

i attended the march on washington dc last weekend and there were a number of black men and women in the march right along side my daughter and i as we marched. are those black protesters considered racist?

If you do not recognize someone being of a different race, then you are saying that person's race does not exsist. That is racist! We all know we are of different races. Why should we try to hide it, I don't care what someone calls me. Y'all should hear what I called at work.Hahahaha. Plus, why is the president referred to as "African-American"? He is half white and half black, or half black and half white(didn't wanna seem racist). so really no-one has total claim on him. Everyone here should just start calling themselves..........AMERICANS!!!!

My wife use to be a teacher in fulton county. She is white and was constantly cursed at by black kids and parents. So I don't hear about some white kid being racist. Fulton county is nothing but racist blacks.

It isn't the color of his skin, it is the content of his policies and the company he surrounds himself with.

Hey Democrats, your desperation is showing. When in trouble you pull that raaaace/hate card. I don't care what color the pres is, I care about the policies being rammed down our throat and how he is driving this economy further into the ground. He has never signed a payroll check let alone how to turn a profit. And I thought Carter was the worst POTUS ever ha! He is losing support and can't even run a cash for clunkers program and do you really think it is about RACE?

The average 6th Grade child is 10 or 11 years old... Question??? why would my child come home a tell me a white student in his class say "I hate black people" Was this child born a racist or was he taught to be a racist? How long will it be if he decide act out his hatred toward another race?

This all coming from an organization that continues to defend a racist nation (as well as shake down its critics) that was just recently charged AGAIN with crimes against humanity. I am speaking of course of Israel, "the jewish nation." Imagine someone referring to America as a white christian nation. The ADL would scream in horror, but "the jewish nation" is ok. In fact you are an anti semite if you disagree. Spare us the crocodile tears you hypocrites.

why was there "a marked increase in hateful, race-oriented speech and writing that started during the latter months of the presidential election process."?
Posted by bob at 5:16 PM
People are just angry, unfortenly some people are down right bad, just take a look at Acorn.
Posted by newnan at 4:14 PM
We are not nazis, Nancy Pelosi and Obama are nazi socialist liars. look at what Acon has done to this country!
Posted by newnan at 4:12 PM
Race, Race, Race. We keep being told we are racist, that any little thing we do is because we are racist. It's almost verbal abuse. Like telling me I'm fat, or stupid, or ugly, every single day. Eventually I will believe it. I may have a case for harassment and verbal abuse since I can't function around black people because I may be construed as racist.

...to add "Right Wing Extremist, Nazi, Astro Turfer, Tea Bagger, Redneck and of course Homeland Terrorist" to the list. All you have to do is disagree with these fruit cakes (Liberals) to be labeled one of many colorful names. They can not back up 99.9% of ANYTHING the preach with FACTS. When all else fails, they play the race card. This will never end folks. Continue to stand up for your values and beliefs no matter what you are called / labeled.

maybe someone could explain why this happened.-- "She said there has been a marked increase in hateful, race-oriented speech and writing that started during the latter months of the presidential election process."
Posted by bob at 11:16 AM
Since when does not agreeing with someone of a different race make you a racist?
Posted by BJ at 11:04 AM
Give me a break, how about a LIBERAL agenda is the reason for the Obama uproar.
Posted by the evil rich at 10:20 AM
Does racism still exist? You bet. Obama and the liberals are all too guilty. Playing the racism card when none exists is racism. We had the example of Skip Gates being arrested for being a jerk. If he were white, no one would have heard of it. Now, we have Jimmy Carter, one of the worst presidents in the history of the country, playing the race card. Joe Wilson can't call a black president a liar but Pete Stark can call a white president a liar (Google "pete stark bush liar")? That is racism, plain a simple.

Maybe you should reread what I said. I did not blame blacks for the welfare program unlike you blaming whites about the welfare program. All I said is there is more blacks percentage wise on welfare compared to the population of blacks in America. I did not make a statement about race and poverty demography are equal nationwide. I was responding to your foolish statement about racism is part of the fabric of the south. Again you are blaming whites for racism in the south. I assure you my wife who use to be a teacher in fulton county the blacks are just as racist if not more then whites. As far as racism in other parts of the country it is no different. The liberal media likes to potray the south as the only racist part of america. There are racist whites and blacks all over. You want to see poverty go to Las Vegas. I lived their for 4 years or the midwest. Its funny america is the only nation where people claim to be in poverty while talking on their cell phone or watching their big screen tv. Go to korea or the phillipines or some of the other foreign countries you will see what poverty is all about. Its funny you liberals didn't mind slamming Bush, but when the favor is paid back its all wrong. You liberals are the biggest hypocrites.
