Common sense, change and drilling for oil were the main topics discussed by Coweta's Congressman Lynn Westmoreland as he spoke at a question and answer session hosted by the Coweta County Republican Women Monday.
Oil and gas are, of course, the topics on everyone's minds, and that's what Westmoreland concentrated on during his presentation.
Westmoreland said he was contacted by a constituent about a petition asking the U.S. Government to "drill here, and drill now" for oil. "I hope you will all go and sign that," Westmoreland said.
But it gave him an idea, and he's drawn up a petition just for congressmen. Bills in Congress can become so convoluted that it can be hard to tell whether someone is for or against something.
But Westmoreland's oil drill petition is very simple. The petition was rolled out last Thursday, Westmoreland said, and asks congressmen to sign if they support more land-based drilling, more offshore drilling, and more refineries.
At that, Westmoreland was met with thunderous applause by the crowd gathered in the community room at the Publix at Thomas Crossroads.
"That is as simple as it gets. So there is no wiggle room in there for anybody to say that they were for something or against something," Westmoreland said.
Westmoreland was asked whether congress members just won't sign at all.
If they don't they'll have someone to answer to. Westmoreland said he has been on several television news shows and will be on radio and television promoting the petition and letting the American people know what is going on.
"We need to have the ability for us to use our own natural resources," Westmoreland said. The Democrats are asking the U.S. to go to other counties and beg for their natural resources.
"Some people are real happy with us and some people are read mad at us," for introducing the petition, Westmoreland said. "But you know what? I don't really care."
Westmoreland was asked how Republican voters can let John McCain understand how much they want more oil production in the U.S.
"People are really working on him today, as we speak, trying to convince him that he needs to get on the right side of this issue," Westmoreland said. "I understand that somebody is going to start the same petition in the Senate that we started in the House."
In 1995, Westmoreland said, the Republican-controlled House and Senate passed legislation to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It was vetoed by President Bill Clinton. If that drilling had moved forward, Westmoreland said, ANWR could be producing one million barrels of oil per day.
The U.S. uses approximately 21 million barrels a day.
The high gas prices are part of the key to getting the United States to get serious about its own oil production Westmoreland said.
"Oil has kind of eased down a little bit because the American people are talking about doing something for themselves," Westmoreland said. That has the oil speculators driving the market getting worried. The market speculation is driven by the assumption that the "American people are not going to do anything because we are controlled by a party that is controlled by radical environmentalists," Westmoreland said.
Once bills get passed to allow more drilling, to use slant drilling and to start getting oil out of oil shale, to build nuclear power plants, "the price is going to fall," Westmoreland said. "There is no other country in the world that is dependent on somebody else's natural resources. China is drilling 45 miles off the coast of Florida. That's our stuff, we need to be getting that," Westmoreland said.
Part of it is just making the decision to do it.
In 1965, Norway was dependent on foreign oil. The country is pristine, and tourism and fishing are major industries, Westmoreland said.
Back in the 60s, Norway decided to start looking for oil. Oil is now the country's number one export.
Oil companies have approximately 68 million acres of leases where they can now drill for oil. That might sound like a lot, Westmoreland said, until you realize that there are 1.76 billion acres on the outer continental shelf, and 700 million other acres of federal land. But oil companies aren't allowed to drill on that. In the current leases, he said, 54 percent of the exploration sites have been dry.
Some people claim that the oil companies are just trying to stockpile leases, Westmoreland said. But if a company is not drilling on leased property, the federal government can take the lease back, once the lease period has expired.
"That argument is useless," Westmoreland said. But most Americans "won't take time" to figure out what is really going on.
State Rep. Lynn Smith, R-Newnan, added that Georgia is well suited to take advantage of renewable energy alternatives, including woody biomass.
Local governments have a lot to do with the future of renewable energy, Westmoreland said. A biomass power plant was going to go to Meriwether County. "Meriwether County said we don't want it. Yet they let a landfill go in," Westmoreland said.
Speaking of landfills, some landfills are using the methane gas created by rotting garbage to produce energy. But in Columbus, he said, a company wants to buy the methane that the Columbus landfill is just burning off. "They can't get the contract from the city. There is something wrong with that," Westmoreland said.
When it comes to energy independence, "don't just look at it from a federal level. You have to look at it from a city, from a county, and from a state level, to use all the resources we have locally, whether it is biomass, whether it is methane."
There are plenty of regulations that make things more difficult, Westmoreland said. Waste wood takes up more space in landfills than anything else, he said. There are technologies to recycle the wood, the concrete, the dirt and the gypsum, "but they can't get the local permits to do it," he said.
"We live in a different world today than we used to live in," he said. Nobody wants a landfill in their backyard, but environmental regulations tell people they can't bury construction debris on their property.
That is "creating another problem. So there's got to be a common-sense solution."
He also mentioned the suspension of deposits into the strategic petroleum reserve. Democrats voted to stop making deposits into the reserve, and he said he thinks there are now plans afoot to start taking oil out of the reserve.
Westmoreland is very much against that.
"You think our oil prices are high now? Wait until we deplete our oil reserves," Westmoreland said. To see what would happen, "ask Jimmy Carter."
"We would be held hostage. We would not have that emergency oil," Westmoreland said. Doing that is the last thing we want to do.
It's a matter of national security. Westmoreland said he would like to see the president declare a national security emergency and "order drilling on ANWR and the other continental shelf."
At that, there was thunderous applause and whistles.
Westmoreland was asked about those "radical environmentalists" and how to stop them.
It's a small group of people, he said.
And being against radical environmentalists doesn't mean he doesn't care about the environment.
"We all want to be conscious of our environment. God gave us the command that we were to take care of this earth and we need to take care of it," Westmoreland said.
If we do not drill for oil on and off shore in the United States we will become obsolete, which many countries are counting on. If we drill, panic will sweep those who have become rich off our money. Thank God you are doing something. Most elected officials are doing O.

I support this petition effort completely. It is the only thing that makes sense to get out from under the control of other nations. Like it or not, our overseas oil sources can be withdrawn at any time for no reason. We are going to regret for a long time the left wing, mostly Democrats, blocking all efforts to build refineries, nuclear power plants, and other efforts to supply energy. Will thelist of Representatives and Senators signing up be updated?

Thank You, Thank you I'm so glad to see you stand up for what's right ! God bless you !!!!!!

..from driving up the prices of the oil that we drill for here? As with everyone else posted here, I am also excited about the possibility of drilling here and building new refineries, but there has also been talk about speculators artificially inflating the prices for their gain (and some might say entertainment). Shouldn't something be done about that in conjunction with this? Thanks, and may God continue to bless this country, this Earth, and all of its' inhabitants.

This makes very good sense.I hope ever one in Congress has enough nerve to step up and sign on and sponser this GO FOR IT!! we don't need to depend on OPEC any more!!

Drill, Drill, Drill, then build refineries. Yes, build nuclear plants as well, wind, etc. But for now, drilling is what we need.

6/18/08 "It's a matter of national security. Westmoreland said he would like to see the president declare a national security emergency and 'order drilling on ANWR and the other continental shelf." This is so what we need to be doing & doing it now. Let's act like Americans and solve our own problems...certainly not like "radical environmentalists." We can do it America! Thank you for your story and guts.

I am tired of the continous bickering in congress. It's time we move away from what is best for THE party, toward what is best for AMERICA. I am going to vote for Congressman Westmoreland soon as I find out where to move to.

Westmoreland keep up the fight to increase oil production. We need more like you in our Congress--The American people are hurting because of the price at the pump. I am so frustrated that the Democratic Party and Obama are working to stop this movement to drill now. Yes, it might take 10 years for the Anwr oil to come down the pipes but it will be here for my grandchildren. Keep us posted with the names that are for drilling and who will not sign--they are our enemy. Let our voices be heard!!!!

It is the radicals on the left that have gotten us into this mess, and they are doing all they can to obstruct new exploration initiatives. The motives of this crowd are varied, but one central theme is the destruction of free market capitalism and the American way of life as we know it. They view sky high oil prices as one way to undermine our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Environmentalism is merely a smoke screen for these operatives.

Does no one remember all the screaming, yelling and lawsuits from the media and left early in Bush 42's first term when VP Cheney was given the task of putting together a energy plan? Bush 43 didn't give us a energy plan because the environmentalists, Democrats and media loudly fought any change that would deliver more oil. The current failed policy is the policy of the left, the same group of marxists promoting Obama for President.

We are constanty told about the failed policies of the past. Certainly the past energy policies have been a failure! These failed policies are the policies of the Democrats of the past, the present, the future. Energy policy should be our #1 (number one) voting trigger this year. Do not support any politician that opposes drilling! We should be drilling everywhere, no limitations! One of the most beautiful sights from my memory were the antelope among the oil rigs that I saw in Wyoming in 1958. Nothing as lovely as a Jensen Jack pulling black gold out of mother earth. If your Representative, Senator or Presidential Candidate opposes unlimmited drilling they are your enemy! DESTROY YOUR ENEMY!

"I'm still wondering why the Republican-controlled Congress didn't pass legislation to allow drilling in ANWR in 2003, 2004, 2005, or 2006. I can only assume that President Bush would have signed it." Perfectly said, someone call Sean Hannity and ask him that one...his response will be "humina humina humina", someone needs to ask HIM the tough questions once in a while. You could ask him a tough question, but he'll fire back a question at you, grill you for not answering his question and be "up against a hard break" real quick. Rambling on.... DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW, SAVE MONEY! It's that simple, let's go Bush...demand to drill!!!!

Thank God, for Westmoreland!!!! Anyone with half "grey cell" KNOWS what must be done & done quickly. Keep that petition roll -ing!!! Any Congressman that does not sign it should be voted OUT of office at the first opportunity!! We Americans are amongst the worlds' top innovat- ors, we can pull ourselves out of this critical situation & stop being beholden to our enemies. They are trying to break us economically!!!! First, we have to break the chains the radical environmentalists have bound around us, second, we have to fully support people like Westmoreland and not give up!! I signed the petition, so did my family & friends--DID YOU???? Remember, "The squeaky wheel, gets the grease"!!!

Way to go America! Its' our country too. Now we've got to let the US Senate know where we stand.

good to see a congressman taking a stand. Way to many just want to waffle through voting "present". Good for westmoreland!!!

I have written to Mr. McCain urging him to Make the statement that he would allow exploring for oil in Anwar. We don't need A democrat who doesn't know anything about anything.

I'm amazed and disgusted that my Representative in Congress, Kevin McCarthy (R) of California, is not on your list. I will email him to encourage him to do so ASAP. I'm sick and tired of my representatives sitting on their butts in Washington, D.C. and doing nothing to help solve the oil crisis here in the USA. Thank you Rep. Westmoreland for your efforts to break the log jam of Do-Nothing Representatives in Congress.

Way to go Congressman Westmoreland. When the talk goes to alternative sources of energy such as wind power, solar, electric etc. it should be noted that we use a lot of products which are derived from oil that have nothing to do with gasoline. Where do we get those?
Posted by Tim Asbridge at 8:14 PM
Kudos to Congressman Westmoreland. It is about time our leaders get real about a national energy policy (in addition to conservation) that makes us independent of foreign oil. What right do we have to mess up the environment of other countries and keep ours clean? With modern technology and regulations, we can have a clean environment and a logical energy policy. Sending billions of dollars a day to our enemies also makes no sense. We are cutting off our noses to spite our faces. In the future our grandchildren will ask "What were they thinking?"
Posted by Kathy Fox at 6:26 PM
Kudos to Congressman Lynn Westmoreland. He is so "right" on the drilling issue. I pray he continues his push and that others join him. President Bush needs to help right away.

It's about time that Congress started listening to the people instead of special interest groups. Thank you for standing up finally!!!!!! Proud American GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!!!!
Posted by Rachel M at 5:40 PM
We need to tell Congress Enough is Enough! I think we should fire the bunch and start fresh with people who love this country and the USA McCain needs to swallow his pride and realize the people is who he is to serve not himself. Drill Now Drill here.
Posted by Donna Rose at 5:27 PM
It is past time that President Bush goes on National TV and DEMAND that that the House and the Senate get off their rear ends and do what the American people need NOW and that is to drill for oil IMMEDIATELY !!!
Posted by Paul Weil at 4:55 PM
The Democrats say new oil will not be available for 10 years. Toyota says the new hydrogen car will not be ready for another 10 years. We can not wait. We need all kinds of energy except the bio that requires the use of food for the world. Corn and such is to feed the hungry. You preach to help the starving in other countries, and than add to the starving by putting food into fuel that is needed for food. Start by drilling, open up new and old fields. Add nuclear plants in the USA. Palo Verde was set up for more units. Refine coal. Let’s get off your a-s and vote for America for a change.

An excelllent article. This Congressman has a good grasp of all sides of this problem and what we should do about it. Obviously, his audience approved. Now if he can just convince the rest of Congress and have the momentum to roll over Pelosi and Reid--the two biggest obstacles to getting something done.

It is my understanding that the piece of land Pres. Clinton vetoed was aside from ANWR and is called Section 10-02. I applaud all that our representatives can do to put into action what the American people want. Its been too long since we've been heard by our elected officials. It will bring a safer and more secure America and reduce the funds going to terrorism worldwide. In the transition, we can work aggressively on finding alternatives for our transportation needs that don't hurt others like food source fuels have recently and are more earth friendly. We need to stop the speculators too who have made money at our expense. Pass a bill and create REAL CHANGE.

Accurate and correct!Great coverage by Sarah! I was thrilled to hear that McCain in one hour WILL announce the retraction on his former stance of NO drilling in Anwhare (sp?)

Vice President Cheney issued a statement on June 12, 2008, stating that China is not drilling for oil off the coast of Florida. A simple news search for "china oil florida" will produce several results. i'm also wondering what we will do in the meantime if we do start to drill for oil in ANWR. Anyone know?
Posted by bob at 1:50 PM
Is china drilling for oil off the coast of Florida or not? I'm hearing yes and no.

Its just beyond imagination why we have not drilled where our resources are. Thirty plus years of feet dragging and no will have led us to this predicament Its time to mandate alternatives this way things get done. Its time to mandate drilling from our resources. Its time to mandate tax incentives for hybrid auto use and production. Its time to mandate flex fuel use. Its time to not only use corn ethenol but also sugar base ethenols as Brazil is already doing. Its time to cut back the high import tax on sugar cane from Brazil. Its time for our elected officials to wake up and do the right things. Get out of the thirty year fog you've been in and develope a real energy policy, not chaos. Its time for you to get with the program.
