Katt Williams questioned in parking lot scuffle

By ELIZABETH RICHARDSON erichardson@newnan.com It might seem that comedian Katt Williams has been playing a game of cat and mouse with Coweta authorities after he was arrested for a second time on Thursday and then questioned in an unrelated matter on Friday. Williams was questioned by police Friday afternoon -- along with at least three others -- following an altercation at the Newnan Walmart, according to Newnan Police Chief Douglas L. "Buster" Meadows. Williams was later released, though the remaining suspects were criminally charged.
The Newnan Police Department was dispatched to the scene at the Newnan Crossing East center on Bullsboro Drive after someone called 911 to report that a man had a gun in the parking lot. Authorities reportedly seized firearms found at the scene belonging to Williams, according to the chief. According to Meadows, authorities now believe that Shirley and Tony Williams -- the mother and brother of Katt Williams' girlfriend, Yolanda -- confronted Katt at the Walmart because they were "concerned about [Yolanda's] welfare" -- a tip that police followed up on to ensure that she was okay. Shirley and Tony Williams were ultimately charged with disorderly conduct, and another person at the scene, Lilly James, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. "There are no charges on Katt Williams at this time and we do not expect there to be any charges," said Meadows. "We checked some firearms and they were returned to Katt Williams. We're still unclear whether there was a gun pulled on someone or not. Three people have been arrested, and as far as I know that will be the end of it." Authorities obtained a search warrant and looked through Katt Williams' tractor trailer while it was parked at Walmart. Meadows said nothing illegal was found. The 38-year-old comedian, whose real name is Micah Williams, was first arrested in Coweta on Nov. 8 on charges of burglary and criminal trespassing. He was freed on $41,150 bond. Williams was then reportedly re-arrested on Thursday on a bond issue. Katt Williams -- who was hailed by Rolling Stones magazine as "the next Richard Pryor" -- has hosted the BET awards and appeared in the comedy "First Sunday." He also had an HBO special, "Katt Williams: Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1," which was shot in Atlanta.
