Programs found, but financial commitment needed

Howard Warner committee requests meeting with city council

The Howard Warner School committee is asking the Newnan City Council for a meeting to talk about the building’s future.

The committee has been looking for programs that might use the historic school building, but the city has so far refused to spend any money for needed renovations -- estimated at $1.7 million. At the committee meeting on Monday afternoon in the city council chambers, the committee unanimously voted to request a meeting between the committee, the council and groups interested in using the building.

Committee member Leroy Hill said the committee has been successful at finding good programs that could be located in the building. “Now funding is the problem. That’s what we need to go back to,” he said.

Committee member Winston Dowdell said the city needs to have a financial commitment to the project.

Loretta Welch, who wants to put an arts-music school at Warner, stated, “That building has been sitting in that community — and it looks really rundown and bad. If the city is not going to put money into that building, it should be razed.”
