Heritage School newcomers join Parker, Khan, Prock in clinching berths to GISA State Track Meet

FROM STAFF REPORTS

There were plenty of victories to line the entire track at The Heritage School during Wednesday’s Region 4-AA meet.

But the biggest one might have been off it.

A program that went from just eight members in 2010 to over 25 garnered a second-place efforts on a day where Heritage even managed to outdistance any potential storm clouds that hung over the school.

“I am proud of these kids because they sure have put in the hard work this year,” said coach J.P. Weaver. “Half our team never participated in track until this season.”

Standouts Chase Parker and Aleisha Khan again helped lead the way for the Lady Hawks, who scored 94 points to finish behind Flint River’s 118. Parker captured titles in the 100 hurdles and the high jump, while finishing second in the 300 hurdles behind Harvester’s Alicia Whittle.

Parker cleared 4 feet 8 inches to win the high jump and breezed to a hurdles victory in 16.56 seconds. Khan, meanwhile won the 1,600 in 6:31.83.

Both Parker and Khan joined Julie Thames and Mackenzie York to win the 1,600 relay as well in 4:50.89.

Last year, Parker and Khan were joined by only one other Heritage athlete at the GISA State Meet. By the end of Wednesday, 10 more had moved on to next week’s meet starting Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

“During our pre- game discussion this morning we talked about the importance of laying it on the line and working towards both an individual and team goal,” Weaver said. “It truly was a team effort.”

Joel Prock earned a return trip to state with a victory in the 3,200, while also finishing second in the mile for the Hawks, who scored 77 points to finish behind Harvester’s boys.

But Prock will have lots of company at state this year.

In the field, freshman David Bready captured wins in both the high jump and 400 meters. Senior John Veal won the 110 hurdles in a tight-finish with Sam Dobbs of Harvester, the latter of which beat out Veal for first in the 300 hurdles.

Logan Kimball added a victory in the shot, with Veal taking fourth in the discus. Will Thompson and Will Duke also clinched trips to state with respective second-place efforts in the 800 and 200. Duke also placed fourth in the 400.

Both Hawks relay teams placed second. Thompson, Veal, Bready and Duke finished in 50.50 in the 400, while Prock joined Thompson, Veal and Bready in the 1,600 relay.

Also headed to state for the Lady Hawks is MacKenzie York, who took second in the 400 and the shot put, while also placing fourth in the 800.

Thames also qualified for Heritage’s girls for next week’s state meet. She finished third in the 200 and placing fourth in the discus.
